Blast from the past - one of Australia's most successful television series on DVD

Apr 09, 2014

A Country Practice was one of the most popular shows during the 80's and early 90s was watched by Australian households every week from 1981 to 1993.  Names such as Dr. Terrance Elliot, Sergeant Frank Gilroy, Esme Watson, and Vernon (Cookie) Locke were just a few of the main characters audiences fell in love with over the years.

The series touched on many taboo topics popular at that time and subjects such as teen pregnancy, underage drinking, cancer, smoking, and drug abuse were considered to be highly "controversial" content for television.  The series aired for 14 seasons and 1088 episodes were produced, making it one of the longest running Australian shows of all time.

A Country Practice also helped to launch the careers for many budding actors and actresses.  Famous actors who had small cameo parts on the show include Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette, Delta Goodrem, Peter Phelps, and Simon Baker.

The series also won the third most successful series at the Logie Awards and Georgie Parker won four Logies for her role as Lucy Gardner.

Though the show finished airing the last season 21 years ago, it still holds many memories for adults who watched the series religiously each week and children who grew up watching it with their parents.

For those who are looking for a piece of memory lane Part 1 and Part 2 of Season 9 is scheduled for release on DVD on March 5 followed by Part 1 and Part 2 of Season 10 in May.
