JOGINIS WINS GRAND PRIZE AT HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL

Presented with the top award in April, JOGINIS was commended for “the quality of direction, richness of image and editing, for its commitment to human rights made with respect and full awareness of the complexity of the subject”.

A compelling and provocative story with powerful images, for the first time ever this documentary captures on film the ceremony which select Indian women undergo when they give their bodies over to serve to satisfy the sexual wants of their villages men. Lack of education, poverty and exploitation of the lower castes have forced these women into a life of prostitution. This documentary exposes the traditional and exploitative system, banned in India since 1988, but still rampant throughout the country. The strength of the documentary lies in the vision of a filmmaker who knows how to stay in the background in order to let these women, who have never before had the opportunity, have their say.
