Core Web Vitals: Are You Ready for Google’s New Ranking Signal?

Jun 14, 2021

The tides are turning once again and Google’s algorithm has a new ranking signal you need to look into. Don’t get caught out in the ranking game. Find out what you need to fix to improve your website’s page experience signals to stay visible in the search results.

Google announced that by mid-June 2021, Core Web Vitals will be included as one of Page Experience ranking signals. This means that loading, interactivity, and visual stability will be considered alongside other UX signals such as mobile-friendliness, safe browsing, HTTPS, and no intrusive interstitials.

Introduced in 2020, there are 3 Core Web Vitals:

  1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is the time it takes for the biggest piece of content to load. So, this can be your page’s hero image, a video or a big block of text. Good LCP is 2.5 seconds or faster. From 2.6 to 4.0 secs of loading means it Needs Improvement and above 4.0 seconds means it’s poor.
  2. First Input Delay (FID) is the time it takes a page to become interactive — when a user clicks a link, taps a button, etc to the time the browser responds to that.  Good FID is less than 100 milliseconds. Between 100 to 300 milliseconds is classified as Needs Improvement and over that is Poor.
  3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is the amount of unexpected layout shift of visual page content. Ideally, this should be less than 0.1 to be rated as Good. Between 0.1 and 0.25 Needs Improvement and above that is Poor.
